Pilates

Question from Pamela Johnson, Jersey:

Which is better mat or equipment Pilates?

Which style of Pilates should I be focusing more on? Should I concentrate more on the matwork exercises or equipment based Pilates?

Answer from Steve Sandwell, Belfast:

Neither style is better than the other. Both complement each other. By doing matwork you will be getting a complete workout but using equipment can encourage your muscles to stretch and lengthen. It is probably best to combine an equal amount of each style of Pilates in order to benefit fully. You can use a variety of equipment to enhance your workout such as an exercise ball, resistance bands, the Reformer, the Chair or the Cadillac. By combining both styles you will get a workout which includes variety and exercises which will give you a lean toned body.
