Pilates

Question from Emma Hammonds, Leamington Spa:

Pilates post-abdominal surgery?

I have had two major bowel operations in the last two years and although am fully recovered, my stomach muscles are pretty weak after such an ordeal. I just want to know if Pilates is a good form of excercise to strengthen these muscles as well as get in shape. I know it's all about your core muscles as I did a couple of classes a few years ago, but am unsure about how to start gradually building up these damaged muscles carefully. I am also currently unemployed so am looking to do these excercises at home for the time being, is there any special mat that I should look into buying or is it ok to do it on the carpet? I also have a condition called Scoloiosis (curvature of the spine) and have been told that Pilates can very good for this condition-is this true? Thanks for any replies.
